Abstract
The growing prominence of sustainability issues has renewed attention to the relationship between early childhood and the natural environment. In this context, the concepts of the educating community and eco-determination provide a useful framework for interpreting the role of education. This paper presents a study conducted in early childhood education, comparing two groups of children who engaged with the same natural environment through different modes of experience. The analysis of the interviews reveals differences in the quality of the relationship with the environment, in descriptive richness, and in forms of interaction. More continuous experiences are associated with more articulated language and with behaviours of attention and care. The findings highlight the value of outdoor education, when fully integrated into the educational project, in fostering educating communities and supporting the development of ecological awareness.
