Abstract

This paper presents a case study aimed at investigating Thesis 12: “The public school, as the custodian of local cultural heritage, guarantees and fosters through its presence on the territory, the construction of a democratic community. Where there is no school, there is no democracy” (Movimento della pedagogia laica, 2026). Drawing on the findings of a series of field studies, the article examines the distinctive features of the IC Carpineti-Casina (Reggio Emilia). An interview with the school principal explores the conditions that enable the school institution to perform this role. The IC emerges as fully aware of its position within the local educational ecosystem: an awareness that translates into active leadership, oriented toward building educational alliances, engaging students in issues of local relevance, and promoting a collective identity rooted in the history and culture of the territory while remaining open to its transformations.
