Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to examine the comprehensibility and efficacy of graphic visualizations used in educational contexts, such as the recent dashboards used in online and blended educational environments. Two different paradigms are compared according to which the design should: (i) minimize the use of pictorial or redundant features and facilitate the quick reading of the chart, or (ii) increase the distinctiveness, novelty and complexity of the chart, preventing a superficial, automatic processing and leading to a deep processing. The problem is relevant for less experienced learners, especially for those with low literacy and numeracy levels, in view of the increasingly widespread use of graphic displays on which decisions and behavioural changes are based.
