Abstract

In 2011 Tuscany will be the first Region in Italy to complete a building process of a Biodiversity Action Plan. We have been designing that plan thanks to the contribution of a great number of person from Tuscan universities and research centres, technicians from public administrations, practitioners and also with the participation of civil society groups such as environmentalists and stakeholders influenced by the plan. The Biodiversity Action Plan selects biodiversity targets, identifies human threats to those values, establishing goals and actions. The plan's main subjects are high natural value and traditional agricultural landscapes, sustainable forest management, changes in land use and land consumption. The qualifying aspects of the process are the engagement and the contribution of policy makers of key areas for biodiversity (such as agriculture, forestry, land use planning, protected areas) and landscape and wide-area approaches.
