Abstract

The paper discusses the most relevant engineering interventions carried out during the centuries in the European watercourses and considers the means and ways to bring them nearer to the pristine conditions. Although a total re-naturalization of the river is almost invariably impossible, an attempt is made to single out reasonable trade-off solutions between the requirements of safety and resources utilization and the reconstruction of a pleasant and congenial environment.
