Abstract

The many challenges that urban and landscape planning are facing today are deeply rooted in the transformation processes that cities have been undergoing, with important impacts on both the lifestyle and health of the population. Such a challenge finds within the concept of the “Active City” a new field of debate, and of interdisciplinary and project experimentation. In this perspective, the reuse of urban voids, marginal and fringe spaces, as well as abandoned or underused green areas represents a fundamental resource to be exploited for enhancing, quantitatively and qualitatively, a city's public and green spaces, as either places for leisure and recreation, sport and physical activity, or social interaction and culture. This contribution presents two meta-design experiences that the research laboratory CITERlab of the Architecture Department - University of Ferrara is developing in the cities of Ferrara and Rimini, working on a disciplinary merging between urbanism, landscape design, public health, and physical activity.
