Abstract

Transforming an industrial/commercial saturated district into an ecological and inclusive neighborhood where citizens can live and work, will ensure a better social, architectonic and landscape quality: this is the ambitious thesis that the Municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo (Florence) has recently proposed to its citizenship, in order to provide the essential services, currently missing, in the area called La Soterna, and to furnish it with open spaces for socialization, mobility and recreation. This is a big challenge launched by Tuscany Region together with the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), as an experimentation proposed to 20 Tuscan Cities that were invited to check out the state of their land’s degradation, in order to find out new strategies for regenerating problematic areas, in implementation of Chapter III of the Regional Law 65/2016. The project proposal’s first aim is to turn the elements of ‘degradation’, such as abandoned buildings, lack of parks and squares, hydraulic risks, into ‘opportunities’ of social requalification and landscape improving, including also a reuse of empty industrial buildings located outside the area of investigation.
