Abstract

This paper regards the research on design carried out by Cesare Leonardi (Modena 1935) concerning the relationship between road and landscape. His professional work ranges from urban planning to industrial design, to photography and visual arts. Since the Eighties, he devoted himself to improving a design method for organising open public spaces. He developed the idea of A-centred Reticular Structures, which he used for several design proposals. The design for the enhancement of the landscape along Canaletto Road between Modena and Mirandola, the proposal for the landscape arrangement along the new motorway between Ferrara and Parma, and the competition for the new bypass in Arezzo, are all examples of his original investigation, and of how a road has to relate to both an inner and an outer landscape.
