Abstract
Changes affect the contemporary habitat, leading to a revolution in behavior with exceptional impacts in terms of speed and intensity on the redefinition of forms and functions of space. Expressions like “gathering place” and “social exchange”, although ordinary and generic, express the need to rediscover links between people severely impaired by different processes, some long-lasting, which seem to undermine the roots of the community spirit inherent in the concept of urbanity. In a world increasingly filled with beings, things, information and images, the territories are shaped by the ripples and unprecedented collisions that cause the disappearance of the common spaces of the city. In the practice of landscape architects, the awareness that open spaces express a structuring and relational potential for the urban habitat is now consolidated; they can become the place where unpredictable things can happen and, welcoming by nature, they enclose a formidable propulsive energy capable of revealing the intensity. On this ground the project can play a role, certainly not as a “peacemaker” recognizing and activating the potential of the situation, working with the existing even if it is something contradictory, uncertain, unstable.
