Abstract

Landscape represents a real cognitive system, whose conceptual dimension goes beyond and transcends the techniques and design of ecological, vegetation, and soil systems to aim at organising or rather structuring the city and the land, acting both on the physical conformation and transformation of places and on intangible processes of a social and economic kind. The different approaches, which have emerged in the past fifty years, are characterized by the consideration of spaces, places and territories of the city’s architectures as landscapes, or by a concrete and practical vision that puts landscape – meant as an organised vegetation system – in the city. The first one has led to the intuition of looking at the behaviour of natural systems as a reference and of considering the city as a living system, the interpretation of which requires the use of new interpretive categories. New concepts from the most advanced studies on ecology inspire the research of new theoretical foundations between natural and artificial and contribute to the identification of design goals that are based on the integration of figurative qualities, social contents and ecological operating principles. The concrete repercussion of these thoughts is detectable in projects and realizations in which the resilience and adaptation abilities of urban contexts are experimented.
